Learning theories - social/observational learning theory Flashcards
What does social learning theory state
All behaviour is learned
What is socialisation
Copying the behaviour of others
In what scenario is behaviour most likely to be reinforced
If shown accurately by a role model
What is a habit
A settled or regular tendency or practice, one that is hard to give up
What is the process of social learning
People like to be accepted as part of a group or society
What did Bandura (1977) state
When teaching skills the demonstration is crucial
What are the 4 processes that must occur for copying/modelling to occur
- attention
- retention
- motor reproduction
- motivation
Elaborate the attention phase for copying to occur
● Must focus on important cues
● Attention to the model is influenced by their perceived;
1. Attractiveness 2. Competence 3. Status
4. Similarity
Elaborate the retention phase for copying to occur
● Observer must able to remember the model E.g. - coach repeating key coaching points
“One-two-sticky shoe” in netball ● Must create a mental picture
● Mental rehearsal can help
Elaborate the motor reproduction phase for copying to occur
● Observer must be physically able to do the skills ● Demo must match capability of observer
● Feedback is important
● Opportunities to practice
Elaborate the motivation phase for copying to occur
● Observer must be motivated to learn
● External reinforcement will increase the drive
E.g. - praise, trophy, money
