Analysing factors of social facilitation/inhibition Flashcards
What is social facilitation
The positive influence of others, who may be watching or competing, on sports performance
What is social inhibition
The negative influence of others, who may be watching or competing, on sports performance
How does being home/away link to social facilitation
Home - comfortable environment, confidence from home fans leads to optimum arousal
Away - may lead to motivation from discouragement from away home fans
How does being home/away link to social inhibition
Home - pressure to perform may over arouse players
Away - poor facilities and discouragement may lead to overarousal and catastrophe theory
How does personality link to social facilitation
Extroverts could reach optimum arousal levels by interacting with the crowd
How does personality link to social inhibition
Introverts may experience overarousal leading to catastrophe theory
How does experience levels link to social facilitation
Autonomous performers may experience a dominant response in presence of higher arousal which is more likely to be correct leading to increased performance
How does experience levels link to social inhibition
Cognitive performers may experience a dominant response at higher levels of arousal which is unlikely to be correct leading to lowered performance
How does type of skill link to social facilitation
Gross skills may require higher levels of arousal generated by the crowd aswell as simple skills which will result in increased performance
How does type of skill link to social inhibition
Complex and fine skills require higher levels of attention and precision which may be negatively affected by overarousal from a crowd leading to lack of concentration and muscular control
How does proximity/hostility link to social facilitation
Depending on all other factors, performance may increase when in closer proximity and higher hostility. Arousal increases without dependence of other factors
