Aerobic energy system Flashcards
What form of activity is the aerobic system most dominant in
Aerobic
What are the 3 phases of the aerobic system and their ATP output
- Aerobic glycolysis (2 ATP)
- Kreb cycle (2 ATP)
- Electron transport chain (34 ATP)
What is the process of the first stage of the aerobic system (aerobic glycolysis)
Same as lactic acid system but because O2 is available, pyruvic acid is catalysed with coenzyme A to form acetyl CoA
What is the process of the second stage of the aerobic system (Kreb cycle)
Acetyl CoA combines with oxaloacetic acid to form citric acid. This enter the Kreb cycle and releases 2 ATP when oxidised, and hydrogen and CO2
Summarise the first 2 stages of the aerobic system
Pyruvic acid + Coenzyme A = Acetyl CoA
Acetyl CoA +Oxaloacetic acid = Citric acid
Citric acid enters Kreb cycle and releases hydrogen, CO2 and 2 ATP
What is the third stage of the aerobic system (ETC)
Released hydrogen atoms from stage 2 are carried to ETC by NAD and FAD. Split into H+/H- ions and removed as H2O when oxidised. Electrons carried by NAD release 30 ATP, and 4 ATP by those carried by FAD = 34 ATP
