Computers π» | Automated systems | 6.1 Flashcards
Define automated system
A combination of software and hardware designed and programmed to work automatically without the need for any human intervention
What components do automated systems use?
Sensors, microprocessors, and actuators
What is the role of a sensor in an automated system?
To take readings from their surroundings and send this data to a microprocessor or computer (passing through an ADC).
What is the role of a microprocessor in an automated system?
Processing the data and sending out a signal taking the necessary action based on programing.
List some scenarios where automated systems are used
- Industrial
- Transport
- Agriculture
- Weather
- Gaming
- Lighting
- Science
Define Distributed Control System (DCS)
A powerful computer system programmed to monitor and control a complex process without the need for human interaction
How are parameters important in automated systems?
Data gathered from sensors is compared to a database, containing parameters / a range of values which data gathered is compared to, making sure the data is within the parameters.
Why are automated systems used in industrial applications?
- To monitor levels of pollution and waste
- To maintain a safe temperature
- To maintain a safe pressure
- To monitor how much is being produced
What are some sensors that may be used in industrial applications?
- Temperature sensors
- Pressure sensors
- Flow level sensors
- Gas escape sensors
- Radiation level sensors
Why are automated systems used in transport applications?
- To automatically stop a train when there is a red light
- Automated pilots in planes controlling the wings, throttle, etc., to maintain correct height, speed, and direction
- Self-parking of cars
- Adaptive cruise control: keeping a car at a safe distance from other vehichles
What are some sensors that may be used in transport applications?
- Proximity sensor
- Gas sensor
- Accelerometer
- Level sensor
- Lasers
Why may automated systems be used in agricultural applications?
- To automatically irrigate crops
- Detect how wet or dry conditions are
- Reducing labor costs of supervision
What are some sensors that may be used in agricultural applications?
- Ultrasonic water level sensor
- Humidity sensor
- Temperature sensor
Why may automated systems be used in weather applications?
- To gather information from remote regions
- To store weather data in a database
