Define Drug
Any substance taken into the body that modifies or affects chemical reactions in the body
What do we use to treat bacterial infections?
Antibiotics
How do antibiotics kill bacteria?
They damage structures specific to bacterial cells. For example, they damage cell walls.
Why donβt antibiotics work against viruses?
Viruses donβt have cell walls. Antibiotics primarily target bacterial structures such as cell walls
What does MRSA stand for?
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus
What leads to bacteria developing antibiotic resistace?
When people overuse antibiotics, the process of natural selection eventually leads to the developing of resistant strands of bacteria that are resistant.
How can individuals prevent the incidence of antibiotic resistance?
- Only taking antibiotics when absolutely essential
- Follow the prescribed course of antibiotics
Apart from the development of antibiotic resistance, what else can overuse of antibiotics lead to?
It may lead to good bacteria in our bodies that manufacture vitamins being targetted by the antibiotics.
