Anatomical Actions Flashcards
What is a flexion?
A movement that decreases a joint angle
What is an extension?
A movement that straightens a joint, returning it to the zero position
What is a hyperextension?
Further extension of a joint beyond the zero position
What is an abduction?
Movement of limbs in the coronal plane away from the midline of the body
What is an adduction?
Movement of limbs in the coronal plane back to anatomical position
What is a rotation?
Circular movement of a part of the body
What is a supination?
Turning the palm upward (anteriorly)
What is a pronation?
Turning the palm downward (posteriorly)
What is a circumduction?
Moving a muscle in a conical shape, with the point of the cone being proximal. One end of appendage remains stationary, other makes a circular motion
What is a protraction?
Moving a body part in the forward direction. Horizontal movement
What is a retraction?
Moving a body part in the backward direction. Horizontal movement
What is an elevation?
Raising a body part
What is a depression?
Lowering a body part
What is an inversion?
Turning the soles of the feet medially, facing each other
What is an eversion?
Turning the soles of the feet laterally, facing away from each other
