vitamins and minerals common meds
- ferrous sulfate (iron)
- vit. b12
- folic acid
- potassium chloride (high alert)
- magesnium oxide
vitamins and minerals complication
- constipation (dark green or black in color/n. heartburn) (iron)
- hypokalemia (b12)
- gi ulceration and distress
- hyperkalemia (potassium)
- never admin k+ iv push
- diarrhea (magnesium)
- cns depression (high doses magnesium)
vitamins and minerals contraindications
- hypersensitivity
- elevated levels of vitamin/ mineral are administrating
vitamins and minerals interactions
- antacids, tetracyclines (reduces absorption of iron)
- caffeine or diary or food (interferes with absorption of iron)
- methotrexate, sulfonamides (decrease folic acid levels)
- phenytoin (folic acid can decrease blood levels)
- potassium sparing diuretics (K+ risk for hyperkalemia)
vitamins and minerals nursing implications
- make sure there i appropriate indication for vit/mineral therapy
- monitor lab values
- monitor for adr/ side effects
- follow package instructions when preparing powder or iv dosage
- have pt. take iron on empt stomach, space doses throughout the day to increase rbc production
- liquid doses should be diluted with water or juice w/ straw, mouth should be rinsed after (iron)
vitamins and minerals pt. teaching
- take as directed
- iron may cause dark green or black stools
