  • antacids, tetracyclines (reduces absorption of iron)
  • caffeine or diary or food (interferes with absorption of iron)
  • methotrexate, sulfonamides (decrease folic acid levels)
  • phenytoin (folic acid can decrease blood levels)
  • potassium sparing diuretics (K+ risk for hyperkalemia)

  • make sure there i appropriate indication for vit/mineral therapy
  • monitor lab values
  • monitor for adr/ side effects
  • follow package instructions when preparing powder or iv dosage
  • have pt. take iron on empt stomach, space doses throughout the day to increase rbc production
  • liquid doses should be diluted with water or juice w/ straw, mouth should be rinsed after (iron)

  • take as directed
  • iron may cause dark green or black stools
  • iron liquid forms should be diluted with water or juice and drunk with a straw, mouth should be rinsed afterwards to prevent tooth staining
  • you may need blood work drawn to check blood count, electrolyte and vitamin levels
  • if you experience dizziness, chest pain, palpitations, rash, or sob notify your provider immediately
