- ototoxicity

- neurologic disorder (streptomycin only)
- elimination of intestinal flora

caution with kidney impairment, hearing loss, and myasthenia graves

- penicillin (inactivates aminoglycosides)
- other ototoxic meds
aminoglycosides antibiotics nursing implications
- obtain speciements before starting antibiotic therapy
- can be given orally, topically, im, or inhalation (based on specific meds)
- need peak (30 min after does) and through (right before next does due) levels for dosing
- teach client to complete entire course of treatment
- monitor for ototoxicity
- monitor I+O, bun, and creatinine

- complete entire course of therapy, even if you feel better
- report any change in urination with your provider
- report any hearing loss to your provider
