used for anemia to increase erythrocytes counts for pts going into surgery (alternative for blood products for jehovahs witnesses)
- stimulates bone marrow to make more abc
- not fool proof
erthropoitetic growth factors common meds
- epoetin alfa: erythropoietin
- darbepoetin alfa: long acting erthryopoietin

- hypertension
- risk for thrombotic event
- dvt
- headache, body aches
erthropoitetic growth factors contraindications
- uncontrolled hypertension
- some cancers (possible increased tumor growth)
erthropoitetic growth factors interactions
may increase requirements for heparin anticoagulation during hemodialysis
erthropoitetic growth factors nursing implications
- obtain baseline vitals (bp especially) and monitor frequently
- administer sq or iv based on clients weight
- monitor hg and hct 2x per week until therapeutic
- monitor iron levels, folic acid and b12
- monitor for dvt
- follow medication preparation guidelines
- consent form to be signed before giving

- may need to take iron concuurently
- notify provider if s/s of blood clot
