P14 - Leukocytosis Part 4 Flashcards
1
Q
leukopenia
A
- decrease [leukocytes]
2
Q
diseases and conditions that cause neutropenia (5)
A
- inflammation
- peripheral destruction
- granulocytic hypoplasia
- ineffective production
- cyclic hematopoiesis
3
Q
pathogenesis of inflammation causing neutropenia
A
- acute infection (severe) -> macrophages and lymphocytes release cytokines
- cytokines stimulate migration of neutrophils to inflamed tissue
- cytokines stimulate release of bands from maturation pool
4
Q
pathogenesis of granulocytic hypoplasia causing neutropenia
A
- damages granulocytic stem cells -> decrease granulocytic precursors -> decrease production of neutrophils
- decrease erythroid precursors and megakaryocytes
5
Q
aplastic anemia
A
- anemia, neutropenia and thrombocytopenia due to decrease production of cells
6
Q
disease and conditions that cause lymphopenia (4)
A
- acute inflammation
- steroid
- depletion
- lymphoid hypoplasia or aplasia
7
Q
pathogenesis of acute inflammatory causing lymphopenia
A
- macrophages and lymphocytes release cytokines -> promote homing of lymphocytes to lymph nodes
- cytokines promote lymph migration to inflamed tissues
8
Q
pathogenesis of steroid use causing lymphopenia
A
- increase glucocorticoids -> shift of lymphocytes from circulation pool to marrow
- lymphotoxic effects might occur
9
Q
pathogenesis of depletion causing lymphopenia
A
- damage to lymphatic vessel -> loss of lymph into pleural or peritoneal cavity -> depletes body of circulating lymphocytes
10
Q
acute inflammatory disorder causing lymphopenia expect to also see either
A
- neutrophilia with left shift
- inflammatory neutropenia
11
Q
leukogram pattern:
- decrease total WBC
- decrease segs
- WRI non segs
- decrease lymphocytes
- WRI monocytes
- decrease to WRI eosinophils
A
- acute inflammatory (endotoxemia)
