OLA Fire Protection Flashcards
What fire/smoke protections are included in the lavatories?
Smoke detectors
Self-discharging fire extinguisher bottles in the waste bins
What fire/smoke protections are included in the avionics compartment?
Smoke detection only
What fire/smoke protections are included in the cargo holds?
Smoke detectors and a fire extinguishing system
When smoke is detected in the avionics compartment, which pbs show a fault light?
Gen 1 Line pb on EMER ELEC PWR panel
Blower
Extract
When will the fire detector unit warn of fire?
Both loops detect a fire or overheat condition within a 5 second period
How many channels are there in the fire detector unit, and how do the loops work with this?
Each loop is continuously monitored by one channel of the 2 channel FDU
What does FDU stand for?
Fire Detection Unit
What happens if one fire detection loop is inoperative?
The other loop operates independently
How many extinguisher bottles are there for each engine and the APU?
2 per engine
1 for APU
(Think AGENT)
What is the purpose of the small red disc on the outside of the aircraft next to the APU?
When APU extinguisher bottle becomes overpressurised, due to a heat build up, it releases its contents into an overboard pipe, and this disc is ejected to indicate that the bottle pressure is no longer available. This will also illuminate the DISCH light on the overhead panel
What happens if an engine bottle becomes overpressurised?
The agent is released through the normal distribution system, and the associated low pressure sensor will illuminate the DISCH light for that agent
How long does the engine fire pb light remain illuminated?
As long as the fire is sensed
What happens when the engine fire pb is pressed?
(8 things)
Silences aural warning
Closes LP fuel shutoff valve
Closes engine bleed and pack flow valve
Deenergises the generator
Closes respective G or Y hydraulic shutoff valve
Arms squibs
Illuminates squib light
Cuts off FADEC power supply
How does the APU fire extinguishing system operate on the ground?
Automatically.
3 seconds after a fire is detected, an emergency shutdown sequence begins and the extinguishing bottle is discharged
How does the APU fire extinguishing system operate in flight?
Manually
What happens when the APU fire pb is pressed?
(5 things)
LP fuel valve closes
APU generator deenergised
APU bleed valve and crossbleed valves close
Fire extinguisher squib is armed
Squib light illuminates
What is tested when the TEST pb is pressed on the fire panel?
(4 things)
Electrical continuity of the firing circuitry
LP warning of the fire extinguisher bottle
Condition of the engine fire loops A and B
Integrity of the FDU
Where is the smoke detector situated in the avionics bay, relative to the fans, equipment etc
Between the avionics equipment and the extract fan
What is a more obvious way of detecting avionics smoke than the avionics smoke detection system?
Sense of smell.
The avionics smoke detection system is mainly used for confirmation
What is the main principle of smoke removal in terms of fans and valves?
Selecting both fans to override causes the blower fan to stop, (extract continues), opens the air conditioning inlet valve, and the smoke is expelled via the skin air extract valve flap. The skin exchanger isolation valve also closes.
The air enters via the air conditioning, through the avionics equipment, over the extract fan and out via the flap
What does SDCU stand for?
Smoke Detection Control Unit
What does CIDS stand for?
Centralised Intercommunication Data System
What happens when smoke is detected in the lavatory?
A signal is sent to the CIDS, which transmits it to the FWC, which generates warnings in the flight deck
It also generates visual and audible warnings to the flight attendants in the passenger cabin
How long does it take to fully discharge the toilet waste bin bottle?
3-15 seconds
