6
Q

How many channels are there in the fire detector unit, and how do the loops work with this?

10
Q

What is the purpose of the small red disc on the outside of the aircraft next to the APU?

A

When APU extinguisher bottle becomes overpressurised, due to a heat build up, it releases its contents into an overboard pipe, and this disc is ejected to indicate that the bottle pressure is no longer available. This will also illuminate the DISCH light on the overhead panel

11
Q

What happens if an engine bottle becomes overpressurised?

A

The agent is released through the normal distribution system, and the associated low pressure sensor will illuminate the DISCH light for that agent

13
Q

What happens when the engine fire pb is pressed?

(8 things)

A

Silences aural warning
Closes LP fuel shutoff valve
Closes engine bleed and pack flow valve
Deenergises the generator
Closes respective G or Y hydraulic shutoff valve
Arms squibs
Illuminates squib light
Cuts off FADEC power supply

14
Q

How does the APU fire extinguishing system operate on the ground?

A

Automatically.

3 seconds after a fire is detected, an emergency shutdown sequence begins and the extinguishing bottle is discharged

16
Q

What happens when the APU fire pb is pressed?

(5 things)

A

LP fuel valve closes
APU generator deenergised
APU bleed valve and crossbleed valves close
Fire extinguisher squib is armed
Squib light illuminates

17
Q

What is tested when the TEST pb is pressed on the fire panel?

(4 things)

A

Electrical continuity of the firing circuitry
LP warning of the fire extinguisher bottle
Condition of the engine fire loops A and B
Integrity of the FDU

18
Q

Where is the smoke detector situated in the avionics bay, relative to the fans, equipment etc

A

Between the avionics equipment and the extract fan

19
Q

What is a more obvious way of detecting avionics smoke than the avionics smoke detection system?

A

Sense of smell.

The avionics smoke detection system is mainly used for confirmation

20
Q

What is the main principle of smoke removal in terms of fans and valves?

A

Selecting both fans to override causes the blower fan to stop, (extract continues), opens the air conditioning inlet valve, and the smoke is expelled via the skin air extract valve flap. The skin exchanger isolation valve also closes.

The air enters via the air conditioning, through the avionics equipment, over the extract fan and out via the flap

21
Q

What does SDCU stand for?

A

Smoke Detection Control Unit

22
Q

What does CIDS stand for?

A

Centralised Intercommunication Data System

23
Q

What happens when smoke is detected in the lavatory?

A

A signal is sent to the CIDS, which transmits it to the FWC, which generates warnings in the flight deck

It also generates visual and audible warnings to the flight attendants in the passenger cabin

24
Q

How long does it take to fully discharge the toilet waste bin bottle?

A

3-15 seconds

25
What activates the toilet waste bin fire extinguisher? Heat or smoke?
Heat
26
How many smoke detectors are there in the forward cargo compartment?
2
27
How many smoke detectors are there in the aft cargo compartment?
4
28
How many loops are there in the cargo smoke warning system?
2
29
How many fire extinguishers are there in the forward and aft cargo compartments?
One which they both share. This means it is important to discharge into the correct hold
30
When would the smoke light end on the cargo smoke panel after discharge?
It may not, because the agent is dense enough to continue to activate the sensors
31
What checks are there when pressing APU fire test pb?
Switch illuminated Squib light on DISCH light on If ground power supplied, also Master warning CRC APU fire on ECAM
32
What checks are there when pressing engine fire test pb?
Switch illuminated Squib light on (x2) DISCH light on (x2) Master warning CRC ENG 1/2 fire on ECAM Fire light on control panel illuminated
33
What causes a fire loop fault?
Loss of electrical signal Failure of detector Fire detected in one loop when other is normal
34
What causes a fire det fault?
Both loops inoperative (note if both inop within 5 seconds, fire warning generated) FDU inop
35
Why is there a 10 second delay before pressing agent 1 during engine fire procedure?
To allow N1 to decrease, increasing effectiveness of agent
36
When can you discharge agent 2?
After first bottle discharged, and after additional 30 second countdown, if the fire light remains on
37
What is the issue regarding engine 1 fire and APU?
Do not open APU bleed
38
What is a consideration if cargo smoke detected on the ground?
It may be exhaust fumes from a ground vehicle
