General Knowledge 3 Flashcards

1
Q

What are the correct pilot actions in a go-around?

A

PF calls “GoAroundFlaps”, selects TOGA and rotates to 15NU (12.5 OEI)
PM raises flaps one stage and calls the new flap setting (eg. flaps 3 if flap full landing, or flaps 2 if flap 3 landing)
PF reads and calls out FMAs
PM calls “Positive climb”
PF responds “Gear up”
Then rebuild. AP as required, NAV/HDG mode as required etc. and PM makes radio call.

Q

What are the correct pilot actions to discontinue an approach?

A
PF announces "Cancel Approach"
Disarm the approach mode (APPR pb or LOC pb - only valid for ILS or FINAL APP guidance)
Select lateral mode as required
Select vertical mode as required
Select speed and adjust
Contact ATC to inform intentions

The above is from the manual. Consider Pushing the V/S button to level off. Bear in mind there may be no “positive climb” as such, so could be worth calling this anyway, or “positive descent” in order to trigger the PF to raise the gear. Remember to fly the missed approach unless instructed by ATC

Q

What are the actions for an engine failure in the cruise?

A

All thrust levers to MCT
Disconnect A/THR
Set appropriate heading and pull
Determine engine out recovery altitude
ATC notify

When ready for descent:
Set speed and pull (M0.78/300kt)
Set recovery altitude and pull for OPEN DES

When V/S becomes <500ft/min, set V/S 500ft/min and pull
A/THR on

12
Q

Briefly describe the air conditioning system - where does the air that enters the cabin come from, and what does it comprise?

A

Fresh air from the engines or APU enter the packs, and is then sent to the mixing unit. Here it is mixed with used cabin air. This mixed fresh and used air then enters via overhead ducts and side panels.

Together, the packs and the mixing unit are in the air conditioning bay

16
Q

What PAs should be made following an RTO?

A

Immediately “attention, crew at stations”

Then, once the situation has been dealt with, either “Evacuate, unfasten your seatbelts and get out” or
“Senior cabin crew member to the flight deck/interphone” or
“Cabin crew, normal operations”

17
Q

If it is possible to reach the cabin, what are the duties in an evacuation for the captain?

A

Take hi-viz if practicable
Take load form
Last person to leave cockpit. Proceeds to cabin to help evacuation as necessary
Last person to leave aircraft. Checks everyone has left.
Evacuates via rear door, unless unable.
On ground, takes command of operations until rescue units arrive

18
Q

If it is possible to reach the cabin, what are the duties in an evacuation for the FO?

A

Take hi-viz if practicable
Proceeds to the cabin and takes emergency equipment.
Evacuates the aircraft using any available exit.
Helps passengers on the ground and directs them away from aircraft.

19
Q

What are the three warnings/events and when will they be triggered in the event of excess cabin altitude?

A

Cabin Alt 8800ft - CAB ALT pulses green on ECAM
Cabin Alt 9550ft - Master Warning and ECAM - CAB PR EXCESS CAB ALT
Cabin Alt 14000ft - Automatic PAX OXY mask deployment

If time permits, a PA “Attention, crew at stations” should be used.

20
Q

What will happen automatically in the cabin in the event of a rapid decompression?

A
Drop-down oxygen masks deploy
Cabin lights automatically 100%
Decompression PA plays automatically
Exit markers and location lights will be switched on
Seatbelt signs switch on
21
Q

What is an example of a PA to use in an emergency descent?

A

“Ladies and gentlemen, this is the captain speaking. We have lost cabin pressure and are descending to a lower altitude. Put your oxygen masks on and obey the instructions of the crew”

22
Q

Following an emergency descent, what may be noticed from the oxygen generators?

A

A smell of burning

23
Q

What are the main actions in the event of a lithium battery fire in the flight deck?

A

Contact crew via the interphone
Fight the fire
Request that cabin crew remove the device from the flight deck, and submerge it fully in water and leave it in the forward toilet for the duration of the flight
Monitor the device for reignition

24
Q

Can you depart without SMK?

A

Yes - the two FAKs are the mandatory ones

25
Q

How do you exit on escape rope?

A

Leg, body, leg

26
Q

What is the severe turbulence PA? How do you let the crew know the turbulence is over?

A

“Passengers and crew be seated immediately”

“Cabin crew normal operations”

27
Q

What does SDAC stand for?

A

System Data Acquisition Concntrator

30
Q

Which CBs have a red collar? Why?

A

Wing tip brakes (WTBs). It would cause you to lose flight control protection
