dissociative disorders
controversial, rare disorders in which conscious awareness becomes sep from previous mem, feelings, or thoughts
fugue state
sudden loss of mem, or change in identity; response to overwhelming stressful situation
dissociative identity disorder
rare; person exhibits 2+ distinct and alternating personalities; OG personality denies existence of other(s); controversial - could be extension of normal ability to switch personality/made up to cover oneself; decreased size in brain areas that aid in memory and threat detection; increased activity in brain areas associated with control/inhibition of traumatic memory; most people have experienced trauma
dissociative amnesia
selective mem loss brought on by extreme stress
personality disorders
inflexible, enduring behavior patterns that impair social functioning; 10 in DSM-5; clustered into anxiety, eccentric/odd behaviors, and dramatic/impulsive behaviors
avoidant personality disorder
withdrawn; fearful sensitivity to rejection; feelings of social inadequacy
schizotypal personality disorder

borderline personality disorder
unstable and unpredictable due to abrupt mood swings and impulsive behavior
antisocial personality disorder
person (usuaully a man) exhibits lack of conscience for wrongdoing; aggressive, ruthless, con artists, violent; symptoms by age 8; psycho/sociopaths; decrease social and emotional intelligence; partially biological; fear and feel little; low arousal to threats; slower to dev conditioned fears; decreased stress hormones; smaller amygdala; frontal lobes are less active and have 11% less tissue; larger and hyperactive dopamine reward system
anorexia nervosa
person (usually adolescent female) maintains a starvation diet, despite being significantly underweight; sometimes accompanied by excessive exercise; 0.6% of Am
bulimia nervosa
binging followed by purging (via vomiting, laxitive use, fasting, or excessive exercise); 1% of Am; weight fluctuates around a normal weight (easy to hide); mostly young women; experience depression, guilt, and anxiety during/after binges
binge-eating disorder
significant binge-eating episodes, followed by distress, disgust, or guilt; w/o purging; 2.8% of Am
