2 major classes of seizures
partial, generalized
two types of partial seizures
simple, complex
partial seizure that has movement or sensory experience with no loss of conciousness or posture
simple
partial seizure originating in temporal lobe and has complicated movement like lip smacking and sometimes isnt conscious
complex
immediate loss of consciousness and falling seizure that is totally rigid and often lose bladder control
tonic clonic generalized (grand mal)
prolonged (longer than 5 minutes) or repeated seizures with no recovery in between and this is a medical emergency treated by iv drugs and life support
status epilepticus
seizure often outgrown in children that are basically staring spells
absence (petit mal)
diagnostic tool for detecting seizures
electroencephalogram
treatment of epilepsy
anti epileptic drugs (aed)
