Digestive System III Flashcards
liver location
- URQ
- abdominal cavity located beneath diaphragm
liver lobes
- right (largest)
- left (extends to left nipple)
- quadrate (inferior)
- caudate (superior to hilus)
define hilus
-location of entry to blood vessels
liver: falciform ligament location
- portion of peritoneum
- attaches liver to anterior abdominal wall and to diaphragm
liver: ligamentum teres location
- fibrous cord
- extends from liver to umbilicus
liver lobules: hepatocytes composition
- aka liver cells
- glandular cuboidal cells
- arranged in “plates” or rows
liver lobules: bile canaliculi composition
- small channels passing btwn rows of cells
- transports bile secreted by liver cells
liver lobules: central veins
-collects blood & transports to hepatic vein and onto the IVC
liver lobules: sinusoids
-passageways which transport blood past hepatocytes
liver lobules: portal triad
contains branches of:
- portal vein
- hepatic artery
- hepatic duct
what supplies the liver with blood?
- hepatic artery (O2 rich)
- hepatic portal vein (nutrient rich, waste)
liver function
- synthesis and storage
- removal of toxic substances
- kupffer cells
- production of bile
liver function: synthesis and storage
- glycogen
- blood proteins (albumin, clotting factors)
- vitamins (A,D,E,K)
liver function: kupffer cells
-phagocytic aged RBC, bacteria
bile composition
- water
- cholesterol
- bile pigments
- bile salts
bile function
-emulsification of fat
bile secretion pathway
-hepatocytes produce bile–>enters canaliculi–> drain into R & L hepatic ducts–>enters gall bladder
gallbladder location
-attached to inferior and posterior surface of liver
gallbladder structure
- lined w mucosa which absorbs H2O
- contain smooth muscle which contracts to expel bile
gallbladder function
- concentration and storage of bile
- expels bile
how does bile get to the small intestine?
- cystic duct
- gallbladder –> duodenum
pancreas location
- runs along the posterior and inferior abdominal wall/stomach
- extends from spleen to duodenum
- retroperitoneal
pancreas structure
- glandular organ
- has head, body, and tail
pancreas function
-both exocrine and endocrine gland
pancreas exocrine function
- secretes into ducts
- produces pancreatic enzymes which digest food in small intestine
pancreas endocrine function
- secretes directly into blood
- produces insulin
liver: types of venous drainage
- central vein
- hepatic vein
