[C] 1.58 General characteristics of the granuloma formation Flashcards
What are granulomatous lesions?
Chronic inflammation in which:
- The predominant inflammatory cell is the macrophage
- These may aggregate to form a mass - granuloma
- Macrophages may also fuse to form multinucleate giant cells
Granuloma formation: Overview
- Long lasting effect (chronic processes)
- Proliferation is increasingly significant
- Local lesion
- Concentric structure (different cell populations form the layers)
Granuloma formation: Causes
- Pathogens (Infectious granulomas)
- Non-infectious granulomas
- Chemical agents
- Foreign bodies
- Biological materials (keratin)
Chemical agents forming granulomas
- Uric acid
- Cholesterol calc
- Aluminium-hydroxide
Give the pathogens that can cause infectious granulomas
- Mycobacterium spp.
- Actinomyces bovis
- Actinobacillus lignieresii
- Burkholderia mallei
- Fungi
- Parasites
Mycobacteriosis can cause granuloma in…
Bo & Av
Dermatomycosis is seen in…
Cat
Examples of granuloma-forming foreign material
- Oils
- Plant parts
- Paraffin
- Vaseline
- Talcum
Examples of granuloma-forming biological materials
- Mucus
- Hair
Importance of cotton in granuloma formation
Cotton is used to make laparotomy sponges for surgery
-
Retained surgical sponge (RSS) - a surgical complication
- Also known as “gossypiboma”
- Inflammatory and neoplastic complications
Idiopathic cause of granuloma formation
Feline eosinophil granuloma complex
Morphological types of granulomas are dependent on…
- Cell populations building up the granuloma
- Composition and radiation of cells
- Order of the concentric layers
Granuloma types
- Epitheloid type
- Pyogranuloma
- Foreign body type
Epitheloid-type granuloma
Epitheloid granuloma may be caused by…
-
Mycobacterium
- tuberculosis
- bovis
- Burkolderia mallei
- Fungi
- Parasite larvae
