[C] 1.58 General characteristics of the granuloma formation Flashcards

1
Q

What are granulomatous lesions?

A

Chronic inflammation in which:

  • The predominant inflammatory cell is the macrophage
  • These may aggregate to form a mass - granuloma
  • Macrophages may also fuse to form multinucleate giant cells

Q

Granuloma formation: Overview

A
  • Long lasting effect (chronic processes)
  • Proliferation is increasingly significant
  • Local lesion
  • Concentric structure (different cell populations form the layers)

Q

Importance of cotton in granuloma formation

A

Cotton is used to make laparotomy sponges for surgery

  • Retained surgical sponge (RSS) - a surgical complication
    • Also known as “gossypiboma
  • Inflammatory and neoplastic complications
