[A] 1.73 Carcinogenesis (biological agents) Flashcards
1
Q
Biological carcinogens: Fungi
A
Mycotoxins:
- Hepatotoxic & Hepatocarcinogenic effect
- Aspergillus flavus B1 aflatoxin
-
Penicillum species:
- Ochratoxin
- Patulin
- Trichotecen
2
Q
Biological carcinogens: Plants
A
Eagle fern
- Chronic bladder bleeding of cattle
- Chronic cases:
- Papilloma
- Carcinoma
3
Q
Biological carcinogens: Oncogenic viruses
A
- Dominant oncogenes in many viruses
- Rous (Chicken - Sarcoma)
- Shope (Rabbit - Fibroma)
- Bittner (Murine mammary gland tumour)
- Gross (Murine leukemia)
4
Q
Oncogenic virus: Mechanism of action
A
- Uncontrolled oncoprotein production in virus
- Cell proliferation
- Viruses insert viral oncogenes into host genome
- Activation of oncoprotein production
5
Q
RNA-viruses as carcinogens
A
- Typical example: Retroviruses
- Two groups:
- Contains oncogens / transformation genes
- Lack of v-onc
6
Q
RNA viruses as carcinogens: Mechanism of action
A
Long terminal repeat (LTR) sequences aid the gene’s activation:
- ALV & FeLV: Integrate before proviral c-onc
- LTR follows this → c-onc is expressed
- Leukemia
Some viruses: c-conc instead of env, this is “v-onc”
7
Q
Oncogenic DNA viruses
A
- Direct: Primarily activates c-onc
- Indirect: Stops apoptosis, inactivating tumor supressor genes
E.g Marek’s disease, Herpes-, papilloma-, poxvirus
8
Q
Give the biological causes of carcinogenesis
A
- Fungi
- Plants
- Viruses - RNA & DNA
- Parasites
9
Q
Parasite-induced carcinogenesis
A
- Spiprocerca lupi - Distal part of oesophagus, dog
- Eimeria stiedae - Biliary coccidiosis; Biliary papillomatosis (Rabbit)
