  • Warfarin is an synthetic anti coagulant drug given short or long term to patients at risk or for treatment of blood clots. For example Deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism.

A

0.5mg, 1mg, 3mg and 5mg tablets.

Why would you prescribe the drug

A
  • Treatment or prophylaxis of blood clots ie PE/DVT.

- pts with atrial fibrillation again to prevent clot formation

A

10mg for two days then dependant on INR

Pharmacodynamics of the drug

A
  • Warfarin inhibits the synthesis of vitamin K which effects the clotting factors II,VII, IX and thus reducing clot formation
