Introduction to the drug
A
- Warfarin is an synthetic anti coagulant drug given short or long term to patients at risk or for treatment of blood clots. For example Deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism.

Presentation of the drug
A
0.5mg, 1mg, 3mg and 5mg tablets.

Why would you prescribe the drug
A
- Treatment or prophylaxis of blood clots ie PE/DVT.
- pts with atrial fibrillation again to prevent clot formation

Typical dose
A
10mg for two days then dependant on INR

Pharmacodynamics of the drug
A
- Warfarin inhibits the synthesis of vitamin K which effects the clotting factors II,VII, IX and thus reducing clot formation

A
-Taken orally
Distributed by the GI tract
Metabolised by the liver
Excreted by the kidneys/urine
