thermoregulation Flashcards
what is thermoregulation
the way in which the body adjusts its temperature
in response to external; conditions
or the amount of exercise being taken
how does body fluid balance affect thermoregulation
fluid loss deceases plasma volume which reduced blood pressure
hence reducation in blood flow to skin and muscles
hence the heart has to work harder, body temp, hence fugue occurs, hence fluid intake is important during endurance activities
how does temperature regulation happen
thermoregulatroty centre is situated in the hypothalamus
changes in body temp are sensed by central and peripheral receptors
body temp is maintained by balancing heat input and heat loss
how does heat input happen
exercise
shivering
metabolic heat
how does heat loss occur
radiation
conduction
convection
evaporation
what happens in hot conditions relating to thermoregulation
evaporation of water from the skin to surface
body also tries to reduce its core temp by ensuring high blood flow to rho shell of the body where heat is stored and radiated to surroundings- causes flush red skin due to more blood than usual in facial skin
high humidity decreases te capacity to lose heat by evaporation
exercise in hot weather creates competition between the act muscles and the skin for lites blood supply
temperature regulation in cold conditions
achieved by repeated muscular contractions
and is accompanied by withdrawal of blood from the edge parts of the body, such as the ski on hands and feet, fluid is then stored in the core and the kidneys will begin to exert water as urines to reduce the total fluid volume held centrally
hence fluid loss in cold conditions
