Study Guide 4 Flashcards
Where is the pancreas located?
- deep to stomach
- stretches across abdomen
- head adjacent to duodenum
- tail adjacent to spleen
Pancreas: 2 major tissue types
- acini
- islets of Langerhaans
Pancreas: ancini function
- exocrine
- secrete digestive juices into duodenum
Pancreas: islets of langerhaans (function)
- endocrine
- secrete insulin and glucagon directly into the blood
What types of cells are contained in the Islets of Langerhaans?
- Beta cells
- Alpha cells
- Delta cells
- PP cells
Islets of Langerhaans: composition % of cells
- Beta: 60%
- Alpha: 25%
- Delta: 10%
- PP cells: very few
Islets of Langerhaans: location of beta cells
In the middle of islet
Islets of Langerhaans: What do beta cells do?
Secrete insulin and amylin
What does insulin do?
- facilitates entrance of glucose into cells
» lowers blood glucose
Islets of Langerhaans: What does amylin do?
Inhibits insulin secretion
Islets of Langerhaans: What do alpha cells secrete?
Glucagon
Islets of Langerhaans: glucagon
increases blood glucose levels by stimulating the liver and other storage cells to release glucose
Islets of Langerhaans: What do delta cells secrete?
Somatostatin
What does somatostatin do?
Helps regulate release of insulin and glucagon
What do PP cells do?
Secrete a hormone “pancreatic polypeptide”
What does insulin do to glucagon?
Insulin inhibits glucagon secretion
What does amylin inhibit?
Amylin inhibits insulin secretion
What does somatostatin inhibit?
Secretion of both insulin and glucagon
