Endocrine Overview 5 Flashcards
What does hypopituitarism result from?
decreased or absent hormonal secretion by the anterior pituitary
What is panhypopituitarism?
generalized condition caused by partial or total failure of all vital hormones
Which are the vital hormones that fail with panhypothyroidism?
- ACTH
- TSH
- FSH
- GH
- Prolactin
Panhypopituitarism/Dwarfism are usually rare, and occur due to:
- Removal/destruction of pituitary by surgery, radiation, chemical agents
- Nonsecreting pituitary tumors
- Postpartum hemorrhage
- Reversible functional disorders
Panhypothyroidism/dwarfism and postpartum hemorrhage: What results?
Necrosis of the pituitary gland
panhypopituitarism/dwarfism can result from reversible functional disorders. What are some of these?
- starvation
- anorexia
- severe anemia
Clinical picture for hypopituitarism pts depends on
- age of onset
- hormones affected
When do sx typically develop for hypopituitarism pts?
When more than 75% of the gland has been obliterated
Hypopituitarism: medical tx
- Removal of the causative factor (if possible), such as a tumor
- This is followed by lifetime replacement of the missing hormones.
What are the two hormones released by the POSTERIOR pituitary?
- ADH
- oxytocin
posterior pituitary hormones: where are they made and where are they stored?
- made in hypothalamus
- stored in posterior pituitary
Where does the posterior pituitary connect with the hypothalamus?
- at the pituitary stalk
- via a series of nerves
ADH =
Antidiuretic hormone
What does ADH do?
Decreases urine output by retaining fluid in distal tubules
ADH is stimulated by:
Stimulated by low pressure in baroreceptors with hemorrhaging and other volume issues
