Cardio 4 Flashcards
CVD: syncope
What is cardiac syncope?
Fainting or lightheadedness due to reduced O2 to the brain
CVD: syncope
If syncope occurs without warning, may be a sign of
- valvular disease
- arrhythmia
CVD: syncope
What may this be a sign of?
- orthostatic hypotension
- more serious pathology (ventricular insufficiency, vertebral artery insufficiency)
CVD: syncope
Variety of other causes aside from vascular disease, arrhythmia, ventricular insufficiency
- hypoglycemia
- aortic stenosis
- VAI
What is vasovagal syncope?
Strong parasympathetic response leading to vasodilation throughout the body, with slowing of heart rate
What may cause vasovagal syncope?
- prolonged sitting or standing
- blood pools in legs
- sudden fall
- regains consciousness immediately
- can happen after blood donation
What is athlete’s heart?
- neurocardiogenic syncope
- vasodepressor syncope
- vasovagal attack
Noncardiac, maybe after prolonged standing after exertion, heat, stress
CVD: fatigue/cough
Fatigue after
Fatigue after minor exertion usually accompanied by other sx
CVD: fatigue/cough
Pt may be on this type of med
Beta blocker
CVD: fatigue/cough
Must differentiate from
- deconditioning
- other metabolic conditions
CVD: fatigue/cough
Cough may indicate
- pulmonary condition
- LV dysfunction
CVD: fatigue/cough
LV dysfunction and fluid backup
Backup of fluid into the lungs irritates the mucosal lining
CVD: cyanosis
- occurs in fingers and toes
- due to inadequate perfusion
CVD: edema
- 3lb or more gain over several
days in hand or foot - abdominal swelling
CVD: edema
Red flags of CHF and R-sided heart failure
- SOB
- jugular vein distention
- RUQ sharp pain
