Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever Flashcards
Rocky Mountain spotted fever known as (RMSF)
is a bacterial disease spread through the bite of an infected tick
Signs and Symptoms
begins with:
(1) headache
(2) fever
(3) muscle , joint pain
signs and symptoms
1-few days after onset of fever, maculopapular rash with flat pink spots appear on ankles & wrists then spreads
2-may be followed by petechiae
3-without treatment, heart & kidney involvement
few days after onset of fever, maculopapular rash with flat pink spots appear on ankles & wrists then spreads :
makyil o papular
maculo papular rash
(1) to plams & soles
(2) up arms & legs to rest of the body
form when small vessels bleed under the skin
petechiae
round red spots under the skin caused by bleeding

pe tech iae
without treatment, heart & kidney involvement, can cause:
(1) drop in BP
(2) shock
(3) death
Causative Agent
Rickettsia rickettsii

Pathogenesis
1-released into capillary blood with tick saliva
2-damages host cell membrane
3-infection can spread into walls of small vessels
4-severe cases release endotoxin (LPS)
tick saliva
(1) bite painless & goes unnoticed
(2) tick feeds for hours
(3) not transmitted until 4-10 hours of feeding
damages host cell membrane which means _______________
cell ruptures
releases organisms
infection can spread into walls of small vessels then ?
(1) inflammation
(2) clotting
(3) necrosis
(4) hemorrhagic skin rash

severe cases release endotoxin (LPS)
leads to :
-shock
-clotting throughout body
disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC)
التخثر المنتشر داخل الأوعية (DIC)

coa gulation
is a rare but serious condition that causes abnormal blood clotting throughout the body’s blood vessels
transmission
1-zoonosis
2-humans accidental host will be severe disease
3-tick infected then transmits to next generation through their eggs
zawin o sis/
zoon osis
little or no disease in natural host
