Oral Herpes Flashcards
Oral Herpes known as : cold sores
and herpes labialis
an infection of the lips, mouth, or gums due to the herpes simplex virus.
It causes small, painful blisters commonly called cold sores or fever blisters
Signs and Symptoms
1- often asymptomatic
2- fever
3- sore throat
4-headache
5-enlarged lymph nodes
6-small blisters or sores develop in throat, around mouth, or on lips
7-lesions typically heal without treatment within 14 days
symptoms in case of recurrences :
1-usually less severe
2-more localized: itching , tingling , burning on lips
3-outbreak of blisters that break
(usually heal within 7-10 days)
small blisters or sores :
1-blisters break within day or two
2-superficial ulcers that can be so painful can be difficult to eat or drink
lesions
1- virus persists as latent infection
2-affected person may suffer recurrent cold sores
Causative Agent :
Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 (HSV-1)
Pathogenesis
1-multiplies in epithelium of mouth or throat
2-cell destruction
3-formation of blisters containing large numbers of infectious virus
4-Immune response quickly limits infection
5-persists in nerve cell in latent form
persists in nerve cell in latent form :
(1) can reactivate
(2) non-infectious & non-replicating
transmission :
(1) primary by close physical contact
(2) fomites
greatest risk :
1-contact with lesions or saliva within few days of disease onset
2-saliva of asymptomatic people often infectious
Prevention :
1-sunscreen (sunlight can trigger recurrences)
2- acyclovir
Treatment :
acyclovir
acyclovir :
-for severe cases & prevent recurrences
-does NOT affect latent virus Not curative
characteristic :
1/3 Americans
