Signs and Symptoms
slight fever
mild cold symptoms
enlarged lymph nodes behind:
faint pink rash over
characteristic
typically mild which means
(1) difficult to diagnose
(2) up to 50% infected people show no symptoms

(1) ears
(2) back of neck
faint pink rash over :
(1) face
(2) chest
(3) abdomen
Causative Agent
rubella virus
Epidemiology
a. respiratory route: highly contagious (but less so than measles)
b. human only natural host
Prevention
MMR & MMRV
people who might be affected :
readily crosses placenta early in pregnancy
significant threat to developing fetus especially if woman is infected in 1st trimester
Pathogenesis
multiplies in throat & local lymph nodes
(1) causing sustained viremia
(2) travels to skin & joints

congenital rubella syndrome (CRS):
(a) cataracts : اعدام عدسة العين : a cloudy area in the lens of your eye
(b) deafness : occurs when a person cannot understand speech through hearing, even when sound is amplified
(c) heart defects= one or more problems with the heart structure that are present at birth
(d) low birth weight
(e) brain damage=the destruction or degeneration of brain cells
(f) stillborn=مولود ميت baby who dies after 28 weeks of pregnancy, but before or during birth
