a serious infection caused by strains of bacteria
It can lead to difficulty breathing, heart rhythm problems, and even death.
CDC recommends vaccines for infants, children, teens, and adults to prevent diphtheria
Signs and Symptoms
(1) mild sore throat
(2) slight fever
(3) malaise (general discomfort)
(4) extreme fatigue
severe cases symptoms :
dramatic swelling of lymph nodes & surrounding neck tissue =bull-neck
many cases symptoms :
whitish-gray pseudomembrane (dead epithelial cells, clotted blood, WBCs) forms on:
(1) tonsil / throat OR
(2) in nasel cavity
later can cause
(1) heart failure
(2) kidney failure
(3)paralysis

Corynebacterium diphtheriae

Epidemiology
spread by air from infected people
(1) inhalation
(2) fomites
human primary reservior
Prevention
DTaP
(Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis) VIS or vaccine information statement

Treatment
antiserum against toxin
(1) done immediately
(2) potent toxin : daleying treatment can be fatal
b. antibiotics to prevent transmission
(1) no effect on absorbed toxin
Pathogenesis
1-little invasive ability (rarely enters blood or tissues)
2-exotoxin
(1) released by bacteria by growing in throat
(2)A-B Toxin
(3) can be absorbed by blood causing damage to:
(a) heart
(b) Nerve
(c) Kidney
3-membrane may come loose
(1) obstruct airway
(2) cause suffocation
