a severe, sometimes fatal, respiratory disease in humans caused by infection with hantaviruses
Signs and Symptoms
a. fever
b. fatigue
c. muscle aches (especially lower back & thighs)
d. unproductive cough
e. nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
f. increasingly severe shortness of breath
g. shock & death
Causative Agent
hantavirus
pathogenosis
1-taken up by phagocytes in lungs & transported to lymph nodes
2-virus enters circulation and then carried throughout the body and then infecting cells that line capillaries
3-capillaries leak large amounts of plasma into lungs
capillaries leak large amounts of plasma into lungs causes :
suffocation
shock & death occur ~40% of cases

1-inhale air containing dust contaminated with: urine, feces, or saliva of infected rodents
2-person to person transmission rare
