Respiration Flashcards
what is the respiratory system composed of?
airway passages, lungs and the associated blood vessels
what is the purpose of the respiratory system?
is to provide oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange between air and blood
what is ventilation?
is the movement of air from the atmosphere into and out of the lungs
how does ventilation work?
- air must be taken in through the upper airway passages comprising the nose, nasal passages, mouth, pharynx and larynx
- the air then proceeds from there into the lower airway consisting of the trachea, the bronchi an bronchioles of the lungs
what is inspiration?
process of taking air in
what is perfusion?
is the movement of blood through the lungs
what is diffusion?
is the movement of gases between the roughly 1 million alveoli or air filled sacs within the lungs and the capillaries that supply the alveoli
how does diffusion work?
- gases move across the alveolar capillary membrane
- oxygen moves from the air in the alveoli into the blood flowing through the pulmonary capillaries
- carbon dioxide passes from the blood into alveoli
- completing the respiration process, the carbon dioxide is expelled through expiration
if respiration is impeded, what happens with gas exchange?
IT DOES NOT OCCUR
- the body’s supply oxygen becomes insufficient for its needs and carbon dioxide cannot be expelled from the blood
