Limbic System - neurophysiology of symptoms Flashcards
how does the limbic system communicate?
higher and lower brain centres communicate with the limbic system to link thoughts and autonomic NS responses to emotions
what is the role of the neocortex and hippocampus ?
mediate cognitive aspects of depression, such as memory impairments and feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness, guilt, doom and suicidality
what are the active neurotransmitters in the limbic system?
serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine
what is the limbic system made up of?
hippocampus, parahippocampal gyrus, cingulate gyrus, amygdala, and the fornix (a bridge like structure which connects the hippocampus with the hypothalamus)
dysregulation and neuroanatomical changes in the hypothalamus are responsible for:
neurovegetative symptoms of depression including too much or too little sleep, appetite and energy, loss of interest in sex and other pleasurable activities
limbic system and basal ganglia are involved in the development of what?
mood disorders
what happens when there is a dysregulation in the active neurotransmitters?
- they are no longer able to do their job well
- causes over activity of the amygdala
- results in abnormality of connectivity within limbic system an may explain symptoms of emotional liability, irritability and suicidality
