Antidepressant drug classes Flashcards
1
Q
what do MAOIs do?
A
block the deviation of norepinephrine and serotonin
2
Q
what are the 4 steps of MAOIs?
A
- norepinephrine is released into the synapse
- norepinephrine binds with its post synaptic receptor
- the action of norepinephrine is terminated by the enzymes monoamine oxidase and catecholamine 0- methyltransferase
- the monoamine oxidase is inhibited and norepinephrine is not broken down as quickly and therefore its action is prolonged
3
Q
what do SSRIs do?
A
inhibit the reuptake of serotonin
4
Q
what are the 5 steps of SSRIs?
A
- serotonin is released into synapse
- serotonin binds to its post synaptic receptor
- serotonin binds to its pre synaptic receptor
- the reuptake of serotonin results in less serotonin being released
- SSRIs block the re uptake of serotonin and therefore more will be available in the synaptic cleft
5
Q
what do TCAs do?
A
inhibit the uptake of norepinephrine and serotonin into the presynaptic terminal allowing norepinephrine and serotonin to accumulate in the synapse and thus enhance their action
6
Q
what do NDRIs do?
A
inhibit the reuptake of dopamine and norepinephrine
7
Q
what do SNRIs do?
A
inhibit the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine
