- physical assessment
- lab results
-radiological findings - pulmonary function tests
what are symptoms of COPD?
dyspnea, fatigue, exercise intolerance, cough, sputum production, wheezing
what can dyspnea be caused by?
disturbances in ventilation, gas exchange, ventilation-perfusion mismatch (V/Q) or increased work of breathing that damages lung parenchyma
fatigue and exercise intolerance occurs because of what?
increased work of breathing depletes energy stores
why does a cough occur?
it is a reflex that is stimulated in an effort to clear excessive secretions and or inhaled irritants from the lower airways
what is sputum production caused by?
inflammation in the airways
why does wheezing occur?
occurs as air passes through narrowed airways
