Edema or Third-Spacing Flashcards
1
Q
what is third spacing?
A
when fluid shifts into the transcellular space and cannot be pushed or pulled out of that space or when there is obstruction to lymphatic flow, fluid becomes trapped in the transcellular space
2
Q
why is edema different then third spacing?
A
because fluid trapped in the interstitial space, this fluid is not readily availible for exchange with the rest of the ECF so is called “nonfunctional” fluid
3
Q
What is the transcellular compartment?
A
Small subdivision of the extra cellular fluid compartment
