what does peak flow monitoring measure?
the peak expiratory flow (PEF) or how quickly a person can exhale
how is peak flow monitoring done?
it can be done at home using a handheld device comparing the result to the patients personal best
how often should peak flow monitoring be measured?
it should be measured around the same time each day and the best of three readings should. be recorded
what is the green zone?
PEF >80%
- indicates it is well controlled
what is the yellow zone?
PEF 50-80%
- caution should be taken
- should use short acting bronchodilator and repeat peek flow measurement
what is the red zone?
PEF <50%
- indicates a medical alert
- should use short acting bronchodilator and seek medical attention or call 911
