Obesity - refers to…
excess body fat and is usually defined as being 20% or more overweight.
Hyperplastic Obesity - def
starts in early childhood - more adipose cells than normal.
Hypertrophic Obesity - def
in adulthood, when individual eats more but works less; same number of fat cells but cell size enlarged to store excess fat.
What are some risk of Obesity?
High blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high levels of lipids in the blood, etc.
Anorexia - def
fear of fat, dieting - leads to excessive weight loss. Can lead to shrunken organs, bone mineral loss, low body temperature, etc.
Bulimia - def
Binge eating then purging. Can lead to dehydration, damage of bowels, etc.
What are some causes of obesity?
Not necessarily understood, but could be from genetics, metabolism, appetite regulation, environment, etc.
How to calculate BMI?
Your weight x 704.5 - then your height x your weight. Then divide the first part by the second!
Weight Loss Therapy Guidelines - who should be treated?
BMI of 30 or more…BMI of 25-28.9 with 2 risk factors, or a large waist circumference.
What does Sibutramine (Meridia) do?
Suppress appetite by increasing metabolic rate (blocking serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake.) So, it is an antidepressant.
What are some adverse effects of Sibutramine (Meridia) ?
Headache, constipation, insomnia, nervousness.
