Osteopathic physician vs osteopath
An osteopath is a diplomat of osteopathy, is not a physician and has a limited scope of practice and isn’t recognized in many countries

4 principles of osteopathic medicine
- The body is a unit of body, mind, and spirit
- body is capable of self regulation, healing, and health maintenance
- structure and function are reciprocally interrelated
- rational treatment is based on the understanding of the basic principles of body unity, self regulation, and interrelationship of structure and function
Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT)
Hands on care involving using hands to diagnose, treat, or prevent illness or injury by moving msucles and joints using techniques including stretching, pressure, and resistance - does NOT heal, a catalyst for the body to heal itself
Counterstrain
Osteopathic technique involving shortening tightened muscles for a period and then passively returning it to rest after holding (slow return to rest)
Muscle energy
Osteoopathic technique involving moving a patient being moved to a position of muscle tightness, then have the patient push against that position, before being moved further into the position in an attempt to increase range of motion
High velocity low amplitude
Osteopathic technique involving a quick pull short distance of an extremity or the spine to loosen stiff joints and relax tissue
Myofacial release
An osteopathic technique involving the minor physical manipulation of bones and joints at the facia of the tissue to alleviate tenderness and discomfort
Visceral manipulation and an example
An osteopathic technique that involves compression of the viscera for a desired effect (improve expectorate ability or constipation)
