A

Spasmodic pains in the abdomen relating to the colon, in young infants paroxysms of GI pain with crying and irritability due to a varietyof causes such as swallowing of air, emotional upset, overfeeding, or unknown cause

Colic - when does it begin and how long does it continue? What pattern occurs with it? Does coddling help? Are they unhealthy?

  • most begin within first 3 weeks of life
  • can continue up to 12 weeks or longer
  • predictable, appears approx the same time each day, usually in late afternoon or early evening
  • coddling doesn’t help

colic treatment options (6) and which one doesn’t work? (1)

A
  • rule out other causes (infection, hairs arounde extremities, etc)
  • alternative caregiver and support if parents can’t cope
  • rocking child or using swing
  • elimination of cruciferous veggies from breast feeding mother’s diet
  • changing formula in some cases
  • herbal teas
  • NO evidence either simethicone or dicyclomine (IBS prescription drug) work
