Patch testing
Test for 36 most common causative allergens that cause contact dermatitis, after placement and checking in 48 hours and then 72 see how irritated the skin is, patient cannot shower with patch during this time
Skin prick test
Lancet used to prick allergen into skin on forearm or back surface to look for immediate type I rxns to 40 substances at once, can put at risk for anaphylaxis***, usually done to identify allergies to pollen, mold, etc. as watch for asthma, hives, or hay fever to develop
RAST test
Newer allergy blood test that detects IgE in blood, better for some as no risk for anaphylaxis and in those who cannot stop antihistamines, results take several days
Topical steroid use principle in patient
Start with a lower class (VI or VII) administering many times a day and work way up unless patient has very severe symtpoms
Steroids in contact dermatitis such as poison ivy require a ___ long course
3 week long
