Module 11-meat or not Flashcards
what has happened to the global demand for protein ingredients and whats predicted to happen
Global demand for protein ingredients has increased dramatically over the last twenty years and is predicted to continue to increase at a rate of 9.1 percent from 2020 to 2050
how will the increase in plant protein impact meat protein
While consumption of animal protein has been a major factor in the increased global protein market, increasing interest in plant proteins may offset market share from animal proteins
why is animal protein expected to increase
Animal protein consumption is expected to continue to increase because of the nutritional benefits it provides and the role that livestock can play in local, regional and international food security
what has sparked an interest in plant protein
the need to supply the world’s nutritional needs in a sustainable manner in the face of climate change and a growing population has propelled interest in plant protein sources
what are some plant proteins being tested around the world
The value of alternative plant proteins from pulses (e.g. peas, lentils, chickpeas, beans), oilseeds (e.g. canola, sunflower), cereal grains (e.g. oats, rice, corn) and other crops such as potatoes as dietary and functional substitutes for animal proteins is being tested around the world.
what are the top 5 reasons for people limiting meat from their diet
1) health
2) financially
3) environmental
4) animal wellfare
5) cardiactic health
where does the consumer market receive most of there information from credible sources for necessary decision making
While it is valuable to consider which of these reasons is scientifically validated by credible science, the consumer market does not receive most of its information from those sources and further education and information are necessary for sound decision-making
how does the plant based market compare to the beef and how is it expected to grow
Currently, plant-based meats are valued at about three percent of the the value of the beef market and even with a predicted growth rate of six percent over the next five years, the market share for plant-based meats will continue to be small
what is hybrid meat and how well are they accepted
The use of hybrid meat products utilizing both plant and animal based protein sources has the potential to balance contributions from the two sources and may receive better consumer acceptance
why health-wise would hybrid products be beneficial
Hybrid meat products may also provide a better protein balance for the consumer as meat based proteins generally have higher nutritional quality and digestibility than plant based proteins
when are lab-cultured meats expected to be in Canadian grocery stores
Lab cultured meats are predicted to be in Canadian grocery stores by 2025
in recent years how many companies around the world were producing lab-cultured meat
In 2020, there were 55 companies around the world producing lab cultured meat
what species were lab-cultured meats made from
a range of species and sources including chicken, pork, duck, horse, kangaroo, foie gras, bison, mouse, tuna, salmon, crustaceans, and sturgeon.
what is a big challenge for lab-cultured meat
The challenges for lab cultured meats are cost of production and consumer acceptance.
