mitosis meiosis Flashcards
features of mitosis?
- Consists of one round of DNA duplication and one round of cell division
- Division of somatic cells to produce more somatic cells
- Resulting cells are diploid
- Results in human cells with 2n chromosomes.
features of meiosis?
- Consists of one round of DNA duplication and two rounds of cell division
- Division of somatic cells to produce gamete cells
- Resulting cells are haploid
- Results in human cells with 1n chromosomes
what is cytokinesis?
the division of the cell at the end of mitosis or meiosis
features of interphase?
- It is the stage of non-dividing cells.
- No chromosomes are visible.
- The nuclear envelop intact.
what is nondisjunction?
- failure of paired chromosomes to separate (disjoin) in meiosis I
- failure of sister chromatids to separate at either meiosis II or mitosis
what happens during diakinesis
Bivalents contract and become more condensed, transition to metaphase I occurs
what happens during leptotene
Chromosomes have been duplicated, unpaired and start to condense
what happens during pachytene
Chromosomes thicken, and crossover (recombination) occurs
what happens during zygotene
Duplicated maternal and paternal chromosomes pair
what happens during diplotene
Homologs slightly separate
what happens during anaphase
Centromeres split, and chromatids are pulled apart
what happens during prophase
Chromosomes condense, and the bipolar spindle develops
what happens during metaphase
Chromosomes fully condensed and are arranged in a line in the cell
what happens during telophase
Chromosomes reach poles and start to decondense
what happens during prometaphase
Nuclear envelope dissolves and the chromosomes begin to migrate
