Malaria facts Flashcards
uncomplicated malaria
fever, chills, muscle aches, fatigue
complicated malaria
severe anemia, seizures, organ failure
Sporozoite
The infective stage, get transfered from female mosquito
Schizont
mature parasites that can release merozoite to infect further, develop in the RBC and to start in the hepatocytes
Merozoite
The form of proliferation, produced by schizonts to infect more cells
Trophozoite
Growth phase in the RBC to become a Schizont
Hypnozoite
Dormant form in the liver
Gametocyte
sexed merozoites that enter a new mosquito to proliferate and infect new individuals
Malaria energy
From host hemoglobin AA via HB -> Heme then hemozoin
Quinolones MOA
Build up in the food vacuoles to prevent heme polymerization into hemozoin causing increased pH and block of Hb proteolysis
Folic acid antagonist side effect malaria
Promote gametocyte formation and therefore increase vector transmission
