Lesson 8 (Part 3) Flashcards
What do muscles of the neck allow? (4)
- Swallowing
- Movement of the head
- Movement of the neck
- Movement of the shoulders
What are neck muscles divided into?
2 triangles
What are the 2 triangles that the neck is divided into?
- Anterior triangle
2. Posterior triangle
What muscle separates the 2 triangles of the neck muscles?
Sternocleidomastoid
SCM
Sternocleidomastoid
Where does the thyroid gland gets is blood from?
The common carotid artery
What does the internal carotid artery supply?
The brain
What does the external carotid artery supply? (3)
- Face
- Skull
- Exterior head structures
What is one advantage when observing the neck?
It is perfectly symmetrical
- so its easy to identify if something is wrong because both sides wouldnt look the same then
Where does the air warm when you breath through your nose?
The nasal conchae
Which blood vessel is more medial?
Arteries
Which blood vessel is more lateral?
Veins
Where do the anterior neck muslces extend from?
The midline of the neck to the anterior margins of the SCM
Where do the anterior neck muscles run from superiorly to inferiorly?
Superiorly from the mandible to the manubrium inferiorly
What are the 3 main anterior neck muscles?
- Sternocleidomastoid muscle
- Longus colli muscle
- Strap muscle
Which anterior neck muscle is most lateral?
Sternocleidomastoid muscle
- SCM
Which anterior neck muscle is most deepest?
Longus colli muscle
What 3 muscles make up the strap muscles?
- Omohyoid muscle
- Sternohyoid muscle
- Sternothyroid muscle
Which strap muscle is most lateral?
Omohyoid muscle
Which strap muscle is most medial?
Sternothyroid muscle
Which strap muscle is in between the other strap muscles?
Sternohyoid muscle
Which strap muscle is the shortest?
Sternothyroid muscle
What does the omohyoid muscle attach to? (2)
- Scapula
2. Hyoid
What does the sternohyoid muscle attach to? (2)
- Sternum
2. Hyoid
What does the sternothyroid muscle attach to? (2)
- Sternum
2. Thyroid cartilage
What is the largest neck muscle?
Sternocleidomastoid muscles
Is the SCM muscle paired?
Yes
Where is the SCM located?
Anterior and lateral
How does the SCM run along the neck?
Transverse obliquely
Where does the SCM extend from?
The mastoid process to the sternum
What does the SCM help with? (2)
- Flexion of the neck
2. Rotation of the neck
What strap muscle is most anterior?
Sternohyoid muscle
Where is the sternothyroid muscle located?
Posterior to the medial border of the sternohyoid muscle inferiorly, and the lateral border of it superiorly
Where is the omohyoid muscle located? (2)
- Anterior/lateral
2. Posterior to the SCM muscle
Where is the longus colli muscle located? (2)
- It is the posterior border of the thyroid gland
2. Anterior to the vertebrae
