Lesson 7 (Part 3) Flashcards
What 2 sets of arteries supply the brain?
- Vertebral arteries
2. Internal carotid arteries
Are carotid arteries more anterior or more posterior compared to the vertebral arteries?
More anterior
Are vertebral arteries more anterior or more posterior compared to carotid arteries?
More posterior
What does the brachiocephalic supply? (2)
- Right arm
2. Head
What does the common carotid artery supply?
Left side of the head
What does the subclavian arteries supply?
Left arm
Circle of willis
Is an anastomotic system of arteries that sits at the base of the brain
What does the circle of willis supply? (2)
- Blood to the brain
2. Surrounding structures
What does the circle of willis allow?
Preservation of the brain tissue
What happens if there is a blockage in the circle of willis?
The blood can move back and go around the circle and supply the same area from a different direction
What is the brains defence against having a major stroke?
Circle of willis
Where does the circle of willis follow?
The base of the cerebral
- on an angle
What comes and join to form the basilar?
Vertebral’s
Where are venous vessels/channels located?
In between the endosteum later and meningeal layer of the dural matter
What do dural venous sinuses receive? (2)
- Blood from the veins in the brain
- dont run alongside arteries - CSF from the arachnoid villi in the subarachnoid space
Where does the dural venous sinuses drain?
Mainly into the internal jugular vein
What is only longitudinal fissure?
Falx cerebri
Confluence sinuses
Where all the sinuses meet up at the back of the head
What is the dural venous sinuses a common spot for?
Thrombosis
- clots
What are the different types of sinuses? (8)
- Superior sagittal sinus
- Inferior sagittal sinus
- Cavernous sinus
- Straight sinus
- Superior petrosal sinus
- Sigmoid sinus
- Juglar bulb
- Transverse sinus
