Lesson 6B (Part 1) Flashcards
What are the false pelvic muscles?
They are actually abdominal muscles but they extend down into the pelvis as well
What are the muscles in the false pelvis? (2)
- Iliopsoas muscle
2. Rectus abdominus
What 2 muscles are considered iliopsoas muscles?
- Psoas muscle
2. Iliacus
What does the psoas major join?
The iliacus muscles
Where does the psoas major join to the iliacus muscles?
At the iliac crest level
Where does the iliopsoas muscle course?
Anteriorly along the linea terminalis
What does the iliopsoas muscle travel over?
The pelvic brim
What does the iliopsoas muscle insert on?
The lesser trochanter of the femer
What is the most anterior muscle of the pelvic cavity?
The rectus abdominus muscle
How does the rectus abdominus muscle sit compared to the linea alba?
Bilaterally
What does the rectus abdominus muscle ascend from? And where does it stop?
Ascends from the pubis to the xiphoid process vertically
What are the true deep pelvis muscle wall layers? (3)
- Obturator internus
- Piriformis
- Pelvic diaphragm
What 2 muscle make up the pelvic diaphragm?
- Levator ani
2. Coccygeus
What 2 muscle make up the levator ani?
- Iliococcygeus
2. Pubococcygeus
What are true pelvic muscle layer considered to be? (2)
- The deepest muscles
2. Most internal muscles
What are the 2 pelvic wall muscles?
- Obturator internus
2. Piriformis
What does the obturator internus muscle cover?
The anterolateral wall of the true pelvis
Where does the obturator internus originate?
On the inner inferior aspect of the obturator foramen
Where does the obturator internus cross and leave the pelvis?
Through the lesser sciatic notch
- makes a sharp turn to insert on the medial surface of the greater trochanter
What action does the obturator internus muscle do?
It rotates the thigh
Where does the piriformis muscle originate?
On the anterior surface of the sacrum
What does the piriformis muscle pass through?
The greater sciatic notch
Where does the piriformis muscle insert on?
On the greater trochanter of the femur
What is the action of the piriformis muscle? (2)
- Rotation
2. Abduction of the thigh
What is the pelvic outlet muscles also known as?
The inferior pelvic aperture
What are the pelvic outlet muscles? (3)
- Pelvic diaphragm
- Urogenital diaphragm
- Perineum
What make up the urogenital diaphragm? (2)
- Transversus perineal
2. External urethral sphincter
What do the pelvic outlet structures do?
Support the pelvic viscera
Where is the perineum compared to the pelvic and urogenital diaphragms?
Externally
How is the perineum divided? (2)
- Deep
2. Superficial
What is the deep portion of the perineum considered?
The urogenital diaphragm
What is the superficial portion of the perineum considered? (2)
- Urogenital triangle
2. Anal triangle
