Lesson 6C (Part 4) Flashcards
What is the basic physiology of the female reproductive system? (5)
- Uterine lining thickens
- Ovary releases a mature oocyte
- Swept into the uterine tube
- Fertilization occurs
- or you get your period and shed the lining - Zygote is create and it implants on the uterine wall
Why does the uterine lining thicken?
To prepare for the embryo
Where does the ovary release a mature oocyte?
Into the peritoneal cavity
How long does it take for fertilization to occur?
3 days
How do you get an ectopic pregnancy?
When your zygote is on its way to the uterine wall and gets blocked by something
What does ectopic pregnancy lead to?
A rupture causing life threatening hemorrhage that requite immediate surgery to stop
- the uterine tube cant accommodate for size of a child
What is it called when the uterine lining is shed?
Menstruation
- then the cycle starts all over again
What shape is the uterus?
Hollow pear shape
- muscular organ
What is the function of the uterus?
To receive embryo and sustain its life during pregnancy
Where is the uterus located?
In the anterior portion of the pelvic cavity that is superior to the vagina
- tilted forward (anteverted/anteflexed)
What position can the uterus also sometimes be in?
Retroverted
What are the 3 layers of the uterus?
- Endometrium
- Myometrium
- Perimetrium
Endometrium
Is the inner layer of the uterus
Myometrium
Is the middle muscular layer of the uterus
Perimetrium
Is the serous peritoneum that is continuous with the broad ligament
- its the outer later
Why do you need a muscle layer in the uterus?
For contraction
What are the 4 main parts of the uterus?
- Fundus
- Horn
- Body
- Cervix
What is the top 2/3s of the body of the uterus known as?
The fundus
Where do the the uterine tubes enter the uterus?
At the broadest part of the uterus, between the fundus and the body
Where is the uterine horn?
Is the area where the uterine tube and the uterus connect
What is the lower 1/3rd part of the uterus known as?
The cervix
Where does the cervix extend?
Inferiorly into the upper portion of the vagina
External Os
Is the opening of the cervix into the vagina
What role does the vagina play?
In the reproductive process
- both beginning and end
What does the vagina receive?
The male’s erect penis during intercourse
What does the vagina act as during child birth?
A birth canal
How long is the vagina?
10-15cm long muscular tube that extends from the cervix to the vestibule on the exterior
Where is the vagina located? (2)
- Posterior to the urethra
- Anterior to the rectum
- urethra –> vagina –> rectum
