What does anatomical position look like? (6)
- Erect (standing)
- Facing forwards
- Arms by your side
- Palms facing forward
- Legs close together
- Feet pointing forward
Cross sectional
Take a slice from the body and look at it from the feet up
Superior/Cranial
The higher of 2 structures
- towards the head
Inferior/Caudal
The lower of 2 structures
- away from the head
Anterior/Ventral
Situated towards the front of the body
Posterior/Dorsal
Situated towards the back of the body
What are 3 examples of inferior/caudal?
- The mouth is inferior to the nose
- The nose is inferior to the eyes
- The kidneys are inferior to the diaphragm
What are 3 examples of distal?
- The wrist is distal to the elbow
- The fingers are distal to the wrist
- The knee is distal to the hip
What are 3 examples of proximal?
- The shoulder is proximal to the elbow
- The knee is proximal to the ankle

Medial
Situated towards the midline of the body
- going inwards
Superficial
Situated away from the centre of the body, more towards the outside of the body
Deep
Situated towards the centre of the body
What are 3 examples of lateral?
- The right flank is lateral to the umbilicus
- The breasts are lateral to the sternum
- The kidneys are lateral to the spine
What are 3 examples of medial?
- The spine is medial to the kidney
- The manubrium is medial to the clavicle
- The umbilicus is medial to the the rectus abdominus muscles
What are 3 examples of posterior/dorsal?
- The spine is on the dorsal aspect of the body
- The spine is posterior to the heart
- The scapula is posterior to the ribs
