Lesson 5A (Part 4) Flashcards
What are the 5 layers of protection for the kidney’s?
- Floating ribs
- Pararenal fat
- Gerota’s fascia
- Perirenal fat
- Renal capsule
What is the main protection for the kidney’s?
The ribs
- little bit of fat and skin
What is pararenal fat?
Fat directly touching the kidneys
What is perirenal fat?
Fat that is not directly touching the kindey’s but is surrounding them
Are the adrenal glands within the protective structures for the kindey’s?
Yes
What does hilum mean?
Opening
What passes through the renal hilum?
Blood vessels
- they enter and exit through here
Where is the renal hilum located?
At the transpyloric plane
What 3 structures are located at the renal hilum?
- Ureter
- Renal artery
- Renal vein
Where in the kidney does the urine get made?
In the cortex
- the functional part
Where do the renal arteries arise from?
Bilaterally from the aorta below the SMA
What do the renal arteries do?
Supply blood to the kidneys
Where do the renal arteries lay compared to the renal veins?
Posteriorly
Where does the right renal artery run compared to the IVC?
Posteriorly
How much of the cardiac output passes through the renal arteries to be filtered?
1/3
What is a tributary to the IVC?
Renal veins
Where does the left renal vein pass compared to the SMA and the aorta? (2)
- Posterior to the SMA
2. Anterior to the aorta
What do the renal veins do?
Drain the kidneys of blood and carries blood purified by the kidneys
Which renal vein is longest?
The left renal vein
Where do ureters originate?
In the renal pelvis
Where do ureters lay?
Medial to the renal hilum
What does the upper expanded end of the ureter receive?
Urine from the renal pelvis
What do the ureters do?
Moves urine inferiorly to the urinary bladder
Are the ureters intro or retro peritoneal?
Retroperitoneal
How do the ureters pass the iliac arteries?
Anteriorly
Where are kidneys situated compared to the QL muscles?
Anteriorly
Are adrenal glands intro or retro peritoneal?
Retroperitoneal
Where are the adrenal glands located?
Superior and slightly medial to the kidneys
Where are the adrenal glands located compared to the QL and psoas muscles?
Anteriorly
What encloses the kidneys and the adrenal glands?
The gerota’s fascia
What supplies the adrenal glands with blood? (3)
- Superior suprarenal arteries
- Middle suprarenal arteries
- Inferior suprarenal arteries
What drains the adrenal glands?
The suprarenal veins
What does the left renal vein drain into?
The left renal vein collects blood from other left veins before going to the IVC
What does the right renal vein drain into?
The IVC directly
What duct runs posterior to the first part of the duodenum and the head of the pancreas?
The common bile duct
What pancreatic duct is more superior?
Minor papillary
- duct of santorini
