Lesson 3A (Part 1) Flashcards
What is the peritoneum?
A very thin continuous transparent serous membrane
What does the peritoneum form?
The lining of the abdominal cavities
What does the peritoneum mostly cover?
The intra-abdominal organs
What are the functions of the peritoneum? (2)
- Support the viscera
2. Provide a pathway for blood vessels and lymphs
What does the peritoneum secrete?
A serous fluid that separates the 2 linings
What are 2 layers of the serous membrane for the peritoneum?
- Visceral peritoneum
2. Parietal peritoneum
What does the visceral peritoneum do?
Covers the organs
What does the parietal peritoneum do?
Is the layer that lines the cavity
What does the peritoneum form?
A closed sac
What is the peritoneum cavity in males?
Closed
What is the peritoneum cavity in females?
Open
What does the peritoneum cavity in females allow?
Communication with the exterior through uterine tubes, uterus and the vagina
Where does the peritoneum over the anterior surface of the rectum extend to in females? What does it form?
- Uterus
2. Rectouterine pouch
What does the peritoneum over the anterior surface of the uterus to the bladder form?
Vesicouterine pouch
In the inferior level of the vesicouterine pouch, where is the rectum compared to the vagina and the urethra?
Posterior
Where does the peritoneum extend from the upper anterior portion of the rectum to in males? What does it for?
- Bladder
2. Rectovesical pouch
Inferior to the rectovesical pouch, what is the anterior portion of the rectum related to?
Posterior aspect of the bladder
What are 3 examples of cul-de-sacs?
- Rectouterine pouch
- Vesicouterine pouch
- Rectrovesical pouch
What 2 cul-de-sacs do you find in women?
- Rectouterine pouch
2. Vesicouterine pouch
What cul-de-sac do you find in men?
Rectovesical pouch
What are 3 kinds of peritoneum?
- Mesenteries
- Omenta
- Peritoneal ligaments
How many layers are there in mesenteries?
2
- fused
What does the mesentery do?
It is a layer of peritoneum that encloses the intestines
What is the function of the mesentery?
It attaches the intraperironeal structures in the abdominal cavity to the abdominal wall
- suspends organs in the abdominal cavity
What do mesenteries serve as?
A channel for blood vessels, lymphatic vessels and nerves
Meso
Middle
Enteron
Intestine
What are 3 examples of mesenteries?
- Mesojejunum
- Mesometrium
- Mesovarium
What does mesojejunum suspend?
The jejunum
What does mesometrium suspend?
Uterus
What does mesovarium suspend?
Ovaries
Where does the mesentery go?
Goes up and around the bowl and comes back down
- creates a 2 fused double layer
- -> 4 layers in total
What does the mesentery allow?
Organs to move around, but only to a certain degree
What does the mesentery hold?
The bowel
