Lesson 1A (Part 2) Flashcards
What are the 4 sectional planes?
- Transverse
- Sagittal
- Coronal plane
- Oblique
Sagittal
Divides the body and any of its parts into right and left sides
- vertical plane
What are the relationships of sagittal? (2)
- Anterior and posterior
2. Superior and inferior
What are the 2 forms of sagittal?
- Midsagittal
2. Parasagittal
Midsagittal
Divides the body into 2 equal parts
Parasagittal
Divides the body into unequal parts
- sometimes referred to as just sagittal
Coronal
Divides the body into anterior and posterior
- front and back
- vertical plane
What are the relationships of coronal? (2)
- Superior and inferior
2. Medial and lateral (left and right)
What is another word for transverse plane?
Axial
Transverse
Divides the body into upper and lower parts
- horizontal plane
What should you always assume with transverse plane?
That the patient is in supine with their feet towards you when viewing images
- look at from feet to head
What are the 2 relationships with transverse?
- Anterior and posterior
2. Medial and lateral (left and right)
Oblique
Any section that is no a direct coronal, sagittal or axial plane
What are the 2 main cavities in the body?
- Dorsal
2. Ventral
What cavities make up the dorsal cavity? (2)
- Cranial cavity
2. Spinal cavity
What are the 2 main cavities that make up the ventral cavity?
- Thoracic cavity
2. Abdominopelvic cavity
What is the largest cavity in the body?
Ventral cavity
What are 2 cavities that make up the thoracic cavity?
- Right and left pleural cavity
2. Mediastinal cavity
What cavity lays in the mediastinal cavity?
Pericardial cavity
What 2 cavities are found in the abdominopelvic cavity?
- Abdominal cavity
2. Pelvic cavity
What does the cranial cavity contain?
The brain
What does the spinal cavity contain?
The spinal cord
Is the cranial cavity and spinal cavity continuous or closed?
Continuous
Is the dorsal cavity continuous or closed?
Closed
- smaller of the two closed cavities
Is the ventral cavity continuous or closed?
Closed
- largest of the two closed cavities
What is the most anterior body cavity?
Ventral cavity
What does the ventral body cavity contain?
Visceral organs
What does the abdominal cavity contain? (6)
- Pancreas
- Stomach
- Liver
- Spleen
- Intestines
- Other organs
What does the pelvic cavity contain? (3)
- Urinary bladder
- Rectum
- Reproductive organs
What does the pleural cavities contain?
Lungs
What does the mediastinum contain? (4)
- Pericardial cavity
- encloses the heart - Esophagus
- Trachea
- Great vessels
