Lesson 6C (Part 3) Flashcards
Broad ligament
A large fold of peritoneum that covers uterus, uterine tubes and ovaries
What does the broad ligament do?
It divides the pelvis into anterior and posterior portions
What does the anterior portion of the broad ligament hold?
The bladder
What does the posterior portion of the broad ligament hold?
The rectum
Where does the round ligaments extend from?
The uterine horns to the anterior pelvic wall
What does the round ligaments pass through?
The inguinal canal
What does the round ligament attach onto after it passes through the inguinal canal?
To the subcutaneous tissue of the labia majora
What does the uterosacral ligament connect?
The uterus and the sacrum
Where does the lateral cervical ligament extend?
From the lateral walls of the cervix to the pelvis
What does the cardinal ligament do?
Stabilizes the cervix
What is another term for the lateral cervical ligaments?
The cardinal ligaments
Where is the uterine horn?
Between the superior portion of the uterus and the superior portions of the fallopian tubes
Where is a common pain for pregnant women?
In the round ligaments
Why is the round ligament a common pain for pregnant women?
Because when the fetus grows it stretches this ligament
What does the round ligament do?
It keeps the uterus in the anteverted position
What does the mesovarium do?
It attaches the ovary to the posterior layer of the broad ligament
What does the ovarian ligament do? (2)
- Attaches the ovary to the lateral wall of uterus
2. A cord like thickening in the broad ligament
What is the suspensory ligament?
An extension of the broad ligament
What does the suspensory ligament do? (2)
- Carries the ovarian vessels
2. Attaches the ovary to the lateral pelvic wall
Where is the mesovarium?
Top part of the broad ligament
Salpinx
Uterine tube
Metrium
Uterus
How long is the ovary?
3cm
How many primary oocytes does the ovary hold at birth?
250,000
Ovarian fossa
Shallow depression in the lateral wall of the pelvis on either side of the uterus
Where are the uterine tubes located?
In the upper border of the broad ligament
- slender tubes
How long are the uterine tubes?
10cm
Where do the uterine tubes extend from?
The upper lateral angle of the uterus to the ovarian region
What is the lumen continuous with?
The uterine cavity
Infundibulum
Is a funnel-shaped distal portion of the uterine tube
What does the infundibulum contain?
Fimbriae
Fimbriae
Finger like extensions in the uterine tube
Are ovaries and the uterine tube connected?
No
What is the distal portion of the fallopian tubes?
The infundibulum
What kind of motions do fimbriae make?
Sweeping motions to try and catch eggs and pulls it in
