Lesson 2B (Part 1) Flashcards
What kind of structure is the aorta?
Retroperitoneal tubular structure
Where does the aorta extend?
From the left ventricle of the heart to the bifurcation of the common iliac arteries
Where is the aorta located? (3)
- Vertical along the midline
- Slightly left lateral
- Anterior to the spinal cord
What comes off of the aorta?
Branches
What do the branches of the aorta do?
Supplies the body structures with oxygen rich blood
What does retroperitoneal mean?
Behind
- abdomen
What are the 3 aortic subdivisions?
1, Ascending aorta
- Aortic arch
- Descending aorta
What are the 2 subdivisions of the descending aorta?
- Thoracic aorta
2. Abdominal aorta
What are the branches of the abdominal aorta? (9)
- Celiac trunk
- Superior mesenteric artery
- Suprarenal arteries (L/R)
- Renal arteries (L/R)
- Gonadal arteries (L/R)
- Lumbar arteries (L3/L4)
- Inferior mesenteric artery
- Common iliac arteries
- Median sacral artery
What do visceral branches do?
They supply the organs with blood in the abdominal cavity
What are 3 examples of unpaired visceral branches?
- Celiac trunk
- SMA
- IMA
What are 3 examples of paired visceral branches?
- Suprarenal arteries
- Renal arteries
- Gonadal arteries
What do parietal branches supply?
The abdominal wall
Where is the celiac trunk located?
Most anterior branch of the abdominal aorta
Where is the celiac trunk located compared to the pancreas?
Superior
What are the 3 major branches of the celiac trunk?
- Left gastric artery
- Splenic artery
- Common hepatic artery
Where does the left gastric artery course?
Superiorly and left laterally
What does the left gastric artery supply?
The lesser curvature of the stomach
What 2 branches of the celiac trunk can you see on an ultrasound?
- Splenic artery
2. Common hepatic artery
Where does the left splenic artery travel to?
Left towards the splenic hilum
What does the left splenic artery supply? (4)
- Spleen
- Pancreas
- Stomach
- Greater omentum
What does the left splenic artery form?
The superior border of the pancreas
What 2 organs use the same blood source?
- Spleen
- Tail of the pancreas
- so they need to be close together
What does the gastroepiploic supply?
The stomach
- omentum
Where does the common hepatic artery course?
Horizontally to the right
What does the common hepatic artery branch into? (3)
- Gastroduodenal artery
- Proper hepatic artery
- Right gastric artery
Where does the gastroduodenal artery course?
Inferiorly
What is the landmark for the GDA?
Head of the pancreas
What does the GDA supply?
The greater curvature of the stomach
Where does the proper hepatic artery course?
Superiorly
What does the proper hepatic artery supply?
The liver by branching into the right and left hepatic arteries
What does the right gastric artery supply?
Medial aspect of the stomach
Where does the GDA connect to?
Splenic artery
Where does the right gastric artery link up to?
Left gastric artery
What does common refer to?
Supplying more than one thing
What does hepatic mean?
Liver
